PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

This International Research Experience for Students will provide US graduate students with opportunities to gain international research experience at the Station Biologique de Roscoff (SBR) in France, a research and training center in marine biology, oceanography, and marine genomics operated by the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and the Université Pierre et Marie Curie. Students will work closely with SBR researchers on the molecular ecology and evolution of marine photosynthetic organisms. SBR is located in Brittany, a western region of France.

Students interested in the program can apply for stays up to 6 months. Preference will be given to applications received by September 1, 2008. Selected applicants will be notified by October 1, 2008. Exact dates and duration of the research experiences will be agreed upon between selected students and their SBR host researcher.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS

Students interested in the program should

Be enrolled as a full-time graduate student at a U.S. university, with priority given to students enrolled in a Ph.D. program;
submit transcript from graduate studies;
provide an abstract of thesis research (maximum of 1 page);
provide a description of research goals and preferred research laboratory while at SBR and preferred duration of visit (3 or 6 months) (maximum of 1 page);
submit two letters of recommendation, one of which must be from thesis advisor;
submit letter from department head stating that student will remain enrolled in and continue receiving support from home institution for duration of stay at SBR.
Accepted students must have passed an introductory French conversation course (either provided through home institution or a private language immersion institution) prior to start of research experience.
